Nick Depuy, an American University graduate majoring in music and literary studies, is an evocative and haunting singer-songwriter. Nick boasts a unique sound that is rooted in old time folk, jazz and blues. But his influences do not define him, as he puts his own stamp on the likes of rock, pop, and hip-hop in the songs that he writes and sings.
Nick was first mentored by the late Paul Leka, the songwriter who penned Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye and Green Tambourine and who discovered Harry Chapin and Dan Fogelberg. Nick was also fortunate to have his talent recognized by, and to work extensively with, industry giant Bruce Lundvall, the retired chairman of the Blue Note Label Group, and former President of Electra and Columbia Records. Prior to Bruce’s recent passing, Nick was honored to share the stage with Norah Jones and Dianne Reeves to honor Mr. Lundvall when he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jazz Foundation of America.
He has already had the great privilege of opening for Hall of Fame singer songwriter, Jimmy Webb, Neil Finn of Crowded House, the first year winner of The Voice, Javier Colon, jazz trumpet player Kermit Ruffins, and art-rock legends Procol Harum. receiving standing ovations for his performances. He has been featured on wplr 99.1, on abc’s channel 8, on cbs wtic 1080 and other cable network shows . Nick has played numerous venues including Fairfield Stage One, the Bijou Theater, at the Gathering of the Vibes Music Festival, The Rockwood Music Hall, The Living Room, and Joe’s Pub in NYC.
Nick’s debut album, “Don’t Be Sorry” is available on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify. Having penned music and lyrics to 60 songs and counting, he has several themed EP’s and full albums that are in development.
Nick also has extensive experience playing educational performances that trace the roots of american folk music to the popular music of today. Nick draws connections with each song he sings and plays on the guitar, banjo and mandolin to the folk traditions that inform them, while passing on the legacies of historic folk and blues artists like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry and Elizabeth Cotton. During these challenging times, Nick is able to make his education performances available to small social distanced audiences in school settings with the help of a plexiglass pane divider. Nick can additionally organize, co run and invite interested parties to scheduled educational zoom concerts from his home studio. From there, Nick can perform his eclectic set of folk, blues, and modern pop, discuss the histories of each song over zoom in between performances, and take questions from attendees.
